Democrats in Disarray Amid Madigan’s Resignation

Without Madigan at the helm, Democrats are proving to be a party that is ripe with division and infighting as the different factions attempt to gain control.

Following Mike Madigan’s resignation as Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois, Democrats are fumbling to find a replacement. Without Madigan at the helm, Democrats are proving to be a party that is ripe with division and infighting as the different factions attempt to gain control.

The fight to control the party apparatus is pitting Governor Pritzker, Senator Durbin, Congressman Chuy Garcia, and others against each other. Despite Governor Pritzker’s early endorsement for Madigan’s replacement, Senator Durbin and Congressman Chuy Garcia later backed other candidates. Pritzker’s influence on the party may be lacking due to recent political failures of his coveted tax hike amendment and legislation to steal federal relief funds from small businesses, as well as his failings as a governor surrounding the crisis at the Illinois Department of Employment Services, Illinois’ failed vaccination rollout, and the state’s delayed action at a state-run veterans’ home.

If Governor Pritzker’s choice as the next Democratic Party Chairman fails to win the nomination, it will show how truly weak the state’s highest office holder is.
