‘It can be denied no longer: Speaker Madigan must go’

What will it take for Pritzker and the Democrats to step up and do the same?

July 27, 2020

Over a week has passed since the first reports of the federal investigations into Speaker Madigan for bribery. Since then, more information has surfaced about these mounting federal investigations. Despite this, Speaker Madigan has not relinquished his gavel, has not resigned as a state representative, and has not stepped down from his post as Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois.

Governor Pritzker and the Democrats continue to deflect questions on whether Madigan should resign, instead opting for a wait-and-see approach. Pritzker often declares himself as someone who is standing up against corruption, like back in October when he called for State Senator Sandoval to step aside while he was under federal investigation. However, when it comes to Madigan, Pritzker has decided to protect that same corrupt status quo that has plagued Springfield for decades by refusing to call for his resignation or asking him to step aside as the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois. Pritzker and the Democrats have also continued to kick the can down the road on much needed ethics reforms, brushing aside calls for a special session to address the corruption that has led to investigations into both Madigan and Pritzker.

Republicans and newspapers around the state have been calling for Speaker Madigan’s resignation since the reports of federal investigations into bribery emerged. What will it take for Pritzker and the Democrats to step up and do the same?
