Pritzker advocates for tax code change that AOC criticizes as ‘giveaway to the rich’

Rather than tackle the real drivers of Illinois’ financial crisis, Pritzker is looking out for his self-interests by advocating for tax code changes that even AOC criticizes.

Governor Pritzker penned a letter to President Joe Biden requesting a repeal to the limit on state and local tax, or SALT, deductions. Pritzker’s reasoning is it would aid middle-class citizens, however, numerous reports have pointed out that would not be the case and even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized the abolishment of the $10,000 limit on SALT deduction as “a giveaway to the rich.”

The liberal leaning Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, found that suspending the cap would result in “62% of the benefits going to the richest 1% and 86% would go to the richest 5%.” Governor Pritzker is in the top 1%.

Much like the Governor’s failed ‘Fair Tax’, the repealing of SALT deductions would do nothing to aid middle-class Illinoisans with the high tax burdens they are subjected to year after year. Unfortunately, rather than tackle the real drivers of Illinois’ financial crisis, Governor Pritzker is looking out for his self-interests by advocating for tax code changes that even AOC criticizes as a “giveaway to the rich.” Pritzker has a history of attempting to save on taxes, such as ripping toilets out of his gold coast mansion and keeping funds in offshore bank accounts.
