Pritzker Lies, Now Trusts Politicians to Draw “Fair” Legislative Maps

Governor Pritzker lied to the people of Illinois in 2018 and now is attempting to rewrite history by claiming the 2011 maps, that came out of the Democratic-controlled remap process, are fair.

Yesterday, Governor Pritzker confirmed that he lied to Illinoisans in 2018 when he pledged to veto a partisan map, announcing that he would sign a map that emerges from the Democratic-controlled remap process this year. Adding, he now trusts Springfield politicians to draw the legislative maps claiming the map created by Democrats that was adopted a decade ago had “a very strong leaning toward fairness.”

The legislative map that Pritzker is now labeling as having a “strong leaning toward fairness” has resulted in Illinois’ congressional delegation going from “8 Democrats and 11 Republicans in 2011 to 13 Democrats and 5 Republicans” today and Democrats having super majorities in both the Illinois House and Senate. At the time of passage, the 2011 congressional map was nationally acknowledged as politically aggressive as Illinois Democrats aimed to “either eliminate or drastically alter districts represented by current GOP Members”. Out of half a dozen states undergoing remaps under Democratic control in 2011, Illinois’ maps were believed to result in “no state going forward has the potential to inflict a similarly devastating map on the GOP.”

“Governor Pritzker lied to the people of Illinois in 2018 and now is attempting to rewrite history by claiming the 2011 maps, that came out of the Democratic-controlled remap process, are fair,” said Kayleen Carlson, executive director of Illinois Rising Action. “The 2011 maps were nationally acknowledged as being used to inflict political pain on Republicans. If Governor Pritzker believes the 2011 maps were made with an eye toward fairness, Pritzker’s definition of ‘fairness’ is vastly different than most.”
