When Democrats passed the Pritzker-Madigan budget in May, they knew full well that it was built on smoke and mirrors in a desperate attempt to appear balanced. Governor Pritzker and the Democrats proved that they were unwilling to do the jobs they were elected to do when they decided to legislate by a hope and prayer instead of making the tough decisions required for a real balanced budget. Now that is has become clear that the federal government will not respond to Governor’s Pritzker imploring for a state bailout, Pritzker is sounding the alarm and attempting to blame others for his own failure.

The Pritzker-Madigan budget was built on the longshot that the federal government would ride in on a white horse to bail Illinois out. The budget included a 7.5% increase in spending from the current year’s budget and made zero spending cuts. Democrats refused Republicans’ requests for spending cuts, because they believed “balancing the budget with cuts would be too drastic.”

When it comes budgeting, Governor Pritzker has a dismal track record. Smoke and mirrors, alongside drastic increases in spending with zero cuts, increases in taxes and fees on Illinoisans, and pay raises to political appointees, is what we’ve seen in his budgets as Governor.
